Idling: Just say no
If you typically drive your children to school or pick them up at the end of the day, you may have noticed an influx of “No Idling Zone” signs on school property. But why? What’s the big deal about letting your car run while you wait for the school bell to ring?
As it turns out, the sheer number of idling cars in school “carpool lanes” is creating a great deal of pollution, and not surprisingly, this is bad for kids. In fact, there are studies that link high pollution levels at schools to increased absenteeism and poor academic performance. (Who knew?)
A number of school districts in Indiana are taking action by prohibiting idling on school property. Enforcement likely varies from one school corporation to the next, but you can certainly help by observing the idling ban. Turn off your car while you wait, and be proud of your efforts to keep our kids healthy and our Earth green.
