This week, we’ve come up with a few sanity-saving tips to make your time on the road as enjoyable as possible.

Plan your route
Navigation devices and online mapping services are fabulous tools, and they can come in extremely handy when you’re planning a big trip. A word of caution: If you get stuck on a winding country road in the mountains, your GPS may not be much help. Consider packing a trusty road atlas, too. It may seem a bit old-fashioned, but it just may save you in a pinch!

Be flexible
No matter how carefully you plan, you’re bound to run into a few things that slow you down (construction, poor weather, etc.). If you head out with the expectation that things may not go exactly as planned, you’re less likely to get upset when you run into a little bump in the road. A good rule of thumb: Always build a little extra travel time into your itinerary, just in case!

Keep your car clean
So you set out on your journey in a clean car. By the time you make your first pit stop, the car is an absolute disaster zone! Consider keeping a few plastic grocery bags in your car. Every time you stop for gas or food, do a quick cleanup. Empty out any food wrappers, trash and other debris. Also, take a few minutes to re-pack books, MP3 players and games in a duffel bag or backpack. (Sure, you’ll get them out again, but it helps to start fresh every so often.)
