What type of oil should I use?

February 8th, 2010 by

Stroll through the aisles of an automotive store, and it’s easy to see that there are plenty of different oils to choose from. So, which one is best for your car? As always, we suggest you check your owner’s manual, but here’s a quick primer:

Premium – This standard oil works well with most light-duty vehicles.

Full Synthetic – This longer-lasting, high-performance oil will flow better at low temperatures and maintain peak-lubricity at high temperatures. But be careful – it’s expensive, and not every engine needs it.

Synthetic Blend – This oil may offer the boost you need if you drive a pickup or SUV and frequently carry heavy loads. It is also formulated to perform well at high temperatures.

Higher Mileage Oil – Many of today’s vehicles last longer, and oil refiners have formulated this special oil for vehicles that have traveled more than 75,000 miles.
